Muang Thong United coach Henrique Calisto, also the former head coach of the Vietnamese national football team, returned to Hanoi yesterday to lead his side in the 2011 AFC Cup group G game against the hosts Hanoi T&T.
The 58-year-old Portuguese coach resigned his post in Vietnam in early March and took over the job at the Thai club Muang Thong United.
Muang Thong United sit atop of the pool with 10 points after four rounds. Tampines Rovers of Singapore followed with eight points. Hanoi T&T stand third with four points, over the Victory Sports of the Maldives.
In Hanoi, Calisto vowed to remain fully focused on his task on facing Hanoi T&T at Hang Day stadium.
“Vietnam has given me many good memorable highlights in my career,” AFC website quoted the coach as saying.
“However, I am a professional football coach, so I will never let emotions and affection distract my professionalism.
“Hanoi T&T are a good team. They have ambition and some good players like Le Cong Vinh. We will play a good game and deliver entertaining football to the Hanoi spectators.”
Head coach Phan Thanh Hung is wary of Muang Thong strikers Christian Kouakou and Teerasil Dangda and also realizes that the visitors, under the guidance of Calisto, know all about Vietnamese football.
“We have no choice but to win the game if we still want to keep our campaign alive. The loss in Singapore last week has narrowed our path and put us into a critical situation.
“One of our biggest challenges is that Calisto knows my players very well and even my coaching style.
“We have to keep our winning desire on the field. Muang Thong United players are good but they are still human and we can beat them.”
